I am a tyre tec with over 25 years experience in car & motorcycle tyres. I have had first hand experience in the motorsport world both as a driver & rider on and off tarmac. More recently, the last ten years my attentions have been focused on the 4x4 world, or more precisely anything Land Rover.

That's that bit out of the way.
I didn't bother doing too much to the engine. Once out off the chassis I steam cleaned it back, removed everything that bolts onto the block so it could be cleaned and serviced. I removed the head, replaced the valve stem oil seals and relapped the valves in after having it skimmed. A new head gasket went on and then after a new cambelt kit and water pump five coats of VHT silver paint. I cleaned, painted and made good all the engine ancilleries before bolting all back on with new gaskets fitted. At least now the block is so bright all the oil leaks will show up so I can see where they come from. I have refitted the flywheel but no clutch as yet as I thought I would fit this just before the gearbox goes back on. I removed the sump and cleaned that out, not a nice job. No gasket for this, or at least I couldn't find one listed with anyone so the old high temp silicone type sealer seamed to be the way to go. Its gearbox time next, anything I do to it will be cosmetic as it seems to be a good one, again no point in boring anyone with a step by step gearbox cleanup diary.
